PowerBook G4

Introduced: January 2001
Terminated: October 2001

The PowerBook G4 was the first PowerBook to use the PPC 7410, a low-power G4 chip.  The case was a new design called “Titanium.”  At one inch thick, it was .7” thinner than the previous PowerBook model and the 15.2” screen had a native resolution of 1152 x 768.  The smaller size meant that there was no longer a removable drive bay and that a 6x slot-loading DVD-ROM was the only built in optical drive option.  There were two configurations available of the PowerBook G4.  The low-end configuration had a 400Mhz processor, a 10Gb hard drive and 128Mb of RAM.  The high-end model had a 500Mhz processor, a 20Gb hard drive and 256Mb of RAM.

The first generation of the new PowerBook G4 series was lauded for its sleek, thin design, fast processor and long battery life.  The wide 15.2” screen was an innovative feature as well.  The original prices were $2,599 for the low-end and $3,499 for the high-end.  The prices were reduced to $2,199 for the low-end and $2,999 for the high end in mid-2001.
